How to learn to express yourself through art?

Main Post:

The question basically covers it. I want to do something creative as a way to express myself, but how do you learn to do this? Just practicing the skills does not really spark a fire in me, but there are times when I really like what I am making and the learning is more of a byproduct. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

I know this is an old post but it intrigued me. In my opinion, everyone has a little bit of art in them and some personalities have more of an imagination thank others and that’s what makes us all unique. But there’s no rules that you cannot become more creative or artistic. It takes practice. A little bit each day. Whatever your detention of creative is- practice it a little bit each day. If you don’t know what that is, there are PLENTY of books that can help! (Trust me I’m on this road myself & I have so many) I hope this gives a bit of an idea of how to be more creative I’m always open to pm!

I want to learn how to express myself clearly

Main Post:

I have trouble finding words to explain how I feel or what I’m thinking.

Top Comment:

I don't feel qualified to answer this, but I think there are two areas to start in.

  1. Level-headedness. After reading this post, I want you to think fondly of it if you find yourself really angry or overwhelmed. Find a way to calm yourself. You don't have to let go of the emotion you feel, but don't let it control your words, actions, etc. Work with yourself to describe it, bring it down, and work on a reasonable solution to the source.
  2. Vocabulary. If you're a native english speaker, there are a plethora of words at our disposal. Other languages have plenty, but I don't have first hand experience in their depth (Ive got minor spanish experience at most). Best way I know to expand vocabulary is to read. Hit up a library, read newspapers, and approach learning new words as a opportunity. Personally, I love looking up new words, and its the nuance that really counts. Even if you don't directly use these words to express yourself, you'll have an idea as to the modifacations you can make to ideas.
  3. BONUS ROUND (takes a long time) Ask yourself how you are actually feeling. It can be hard and feel downright impossible to admit to yourself the true reasons behind emotions. Push through this. Sometimes I find myself in need of flat out running the scientific method on myself:

hypothesis test result conclusion

And sometimes Ill hit it and push it aside because I still dont want to admit it. But when you hit the reason, you'll know. And you'll be able to describe it accurately and with a clear mind.

Final thought: there is nuance in expression as well. When remaining calm, pay attention to your own tone of voice, body language, etc. because "I said" doesnt necessarily translate to "they heard".

How to express yourself more fully and stop being trapped in your head: (1 Simple thing)

Main Post:

What happens is that we try to think our way out of being too neurotic or always up in our heads. We read these posts, try to memorize them and apply them into our life. How? By thinking. You're wayy up in your head, and you're trying to break out of it by thinking even more. New techniques, ideas and inspiring stories. Sure, they are helpful, but it's just more filler to your overcrowded mind.

You can't stop overthinking by diverting your attention to the thing that is causing the problem in the first place, and that is your head. I hope you can see what's the problem here. So, how can you fix this situation: it's very simple, but sounds a bit silly.

Put on your favorite music, that gets you super pumped up or excited. Make a 10-20 minute playlist that has really angry music, sad music, happy music, music that brings out all the different emotions inside you. Whatever that just gets you fucking excited when you hear that song.

And then, just start dancing and moving to the music like a madman. Jump up and down, swing your hands, bang your head with the music, scream the lyrics, shake like a crazy person. Do ANYTHING that you feel like doing. I'm saying give ALL your energy into this 10-20 minute window. Don't think, just move.

Now you're probably thinking "Is OP high or some shit? I'm trying to get rid of my social anxiety and instead this guy gives me the instructions to being a madman?" Stop thinking, just try it out for a few days and see what happens. If you've never done this, and this happened to me on the first times also, is that your ego gets in the way. "Oh this is kinda weird, what if someone sees this, this is ridiculous, this is stupid", even when you're behind closed doors and alone! The more you do it, the easier it is to just let go and express yourself the way you want to.

I've done this only for about a week and I already feel more comfortable in my own skin. I can move more freely and less oppressive thoughts come up. I've even taken interest in learning how to actually dance properly! Before I had zero interest in "dancing". It's just so damn awesome to move! So just try it out with an open mind.

PS: Try to couple this with sitting meditation for maximum results! :)

i feel like I can't truly express myself when interacting with others

Main Post:

idk why I don't know the person that I put out to be irl, it feels so fake and inauthentic and not me. When people are talking to me ,I say random weird shit which I don't even know why I said that , and regret it a second later , idk why I can't just be my genuine self ,and just say whatever the fucking shit I want with confidence . I guess I'm not really comfortable with myself when others are around ,even if I don't generally feel anxious ,I just feel dead ,like I turn into a boring , people-pleasing person.

I came to terms that I do have a personality , maybe an interesting one even , well when texting people or in situations where there isn't anxiety words just come to my mind naturally and I actually do enjoy the conversation , at least to some degree I feel connected to the other person bc I can express myself and actually feel like the other person gets me ,or my broken humour. But in real life interactions ,it's like boom , I turn into a low self esteem boring awkward person that I wouldn't even be friends with if I was others . DOES THAT MAKE SENSE ?? like if I am my own clone I wouldn't even enjoy having a conversation with her. And after a interaction it feels so unfulfilling and I feel sad and a lot of pain with it.I worked on myself like I do want to heal myself but I'm stuck at this weird stage I don't even know what to do.

Anyone here feels utterly scared to express yourself? How do I get more courage to do it?

Main Post:

I'm a 22F who has been afraid of expressing myself. Maybe "expressing" is not the right word either. I'm fairly comfortable speaking my mind out and standing up for myself in social settings, I didn't even know how outspoken I can be if not my friends that told me I had this "influencing" ability from the way I communicate.

It's just that I am really scared to express my real, authentic self. I never show how I *truly* am to the world and instead become anything anyone wants me to be. Maybe this some of you can relate. I know that this is one of the classic INFJ traits, but I began to think long ago maybe it's just that I don't have a stable sense of identity.

And the thing is it actually has been affecting my life for years. I won't go into details—dreams wasted, efforts fail, relationships break, you name it. Once in a while, I would feel utterly lonely because no one doesn't really see and understand me as I am, but then again I'm really scared whenever I got too intimate with someone and just ran.

This also somehow affects my professional life ahead and I've been looking for courage but it's so terrifying. So I used to write as my creative outlet and has always dream to spread my wings in this field, people around me also always somehow realize and told me I had a knack for writing and that I should go for it. I write something about life, emotions, being human. I also share my personal story.

There was a time back in college when I was more true and courageous, where I wrote on my blog and posted my stuff on social media and this somehow seemed to attract people. I would have people I never talk to come up to me and tell me they had been noticing me. Even there was some guy who consistently stalked my profile according to my friends. Some people may found this fluttering, but for me, it was just plain scary that I even closed my personal blog I was trying to establish and never start again until now. Just the thought of someone noticing me makes me wanna run away and hide.

I know that I am scared of being exposed because I think I feel worthless deep inside and I don't amount to anything. It's so scary and uncomfortable for people to see your vulnerability, you know. I think maybe I'm also scared that once they got to know me they'll be left disappointed because there's nothing in me.

I really want to have courage because I've been feeling like I have nothing to live for other than this. I mean this was something that really motivated me and made me feel like there's more for me in life, but I'm still scared. I wonder if any of you has been through this kind of thing... what's your story and how did you get out of it?

In order to make it easier for others to understand you, it's important that you understand yourself well first. And in case of INFJ's that's usually a struggle.

People are affected by reality in many ways and it's more commonly shown through their mood and feelings. In our case, we may bring a whole new different personality as a reaction to our circumstances, but nonetheless our core is the same. I believe that accepting this fact about ourselves is a big step towards self-acceptance and moving on. As for the people in our lives or those that we're trying to let it, it's important to be communicative about this trait so they can understand.

You should start posting again or find a new way of expressing yourself, as it's evident that you really enjoyed it and it helped you feel connected with the world and your virtues. Also, you should be more appreciative of yourself and if there are things that you're not happy about, you can always work towards changing them for the better. After all, we're always going to be a work in progress.

Breaking out of your protective shell and being willing to trade your comfort zone for experiences is an important step that I had to take as well. But since timing always plays a huge role in everything, you should not pressure yourself and start when you're feeling ready.

People who can express themselves clearly and make themselves understood whenever you open your mouth: How the hell do you do that?

I'm better at expressing how I feel now than when I was younger. For me personally, formal higher education actually helped a lot. Spending multiple hours a day hearing other people discuss and express relatively complex thoughts made it easier to find ways to express my own thoughts.
